The Government has approved a major environmental cleanup initiative that will see thousands of tonnes of scrap metal removed from the Cooks Landfill and other designated locations under a no-cost agreement with a private contractor.
Cabinet approved the execution of an agreement between the Ministry of Health, Wellness, the Environment and Public Service Affairs and Atlantic Ship Breakers Antigua Limited for the removal, processing and export of accumulated scrap metal throughout the country.
Officials said the project forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to improve environmental conditions, enhance public safety and reclaim land occupied by derelict materials.
Under the agreement, Atlantic Ship Breakers Antigua Limited will mobilize all equipment, personnel and resources necessary to remove, compact and export scrap metal while maintaining certified weighing systems and detailed records of all materials processed.
The company will also be responsible for obtaining all required environmental approvals, trade licences and export permits and must ensure that all activities comply with national environmental, occupational health and safety, and statutory regulations.
Importantly, Cabinet was advised that the initiative will impose no direct financial burden on taxpayers. The contractor’s compensation will come entirely from the commercial value of the scrap metal recovered and exported, with the company assuming all operational expenses.
The project is expected to be completed within twelve months, after which Government officials will conduct a final inspection before issuing a Certificate of Completion confirming that contractual obligations have been satisfied.
Cabinet noted that the removal of abandoned scrap metal will reduce environmental hazards, improve public health and safety, eliminate breeding grounds for pests and recover valuable land that can be repurposed for future development.
The Government described the partnership as an important example of sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining cleaner and safer communities throughout Antigua and Barbuda.
Officials expressed confidence that the initiative will contribute significantly to the country’s environmental sustainability agenda and improve the appearance and functionality of public spaces.
