The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is set to strengthen its early childhood education network through the acquisition of one of the country’s most respected preschools and the construction of additional learning centres in two communities.

Cabinet endorsed plans for the Government to assume responsibility for the Sir Luther Wynter Preschool, a landmark institution founded more than five decades ago by the late Dame Edris Bird.

Education Minister Daryll Matthew informed Cabinet that the school, located on Queen Elizabeth Highway, currently operates as an affiliated Child Development Centre of the UWI Global Campus and serves as a teaching-practice facility for students pursuing qualifications in early childhood development.

The preschool has earned international recognition as a UNESCO-designated model school and has played a significant role in shaping early childhood education in Antigua and Barbuda.

Cabinet welcomed its integration into the Government’s expanding network of public early childhood institutions, noting that the transition will preserve the school’s legacy while increasing access to quality preschool education.

The Minister also announced plans to establish additional early childhood centres in the Judges Hill/New Winthorpes and Jennings communities as part of the Government’s wider strategy to ensure that more young children benefit from structured learning during their formative years.

Research has consistently shown that access to quality early childhood education contributes significantly to improved literacy, cognitive development and long-term academic success, making investment in preschool education a critical component of national development.

Cabinet reaffirmed its commitment to investing in the nation’s youngest citizens and emphasized that expanding access to safe, nurturing and high-quality learning environments remains a key education priority.

The Government believes the latest initiatives will strengthen the foundation of the education system while ensuring that future generations are better prepared for lifelong learning and personal development.
