A new restructuring initiative within the Treasury Department is set to enhance financial oversight and accountability across Government ministries in Antigua and Barbuda.

Cabinet has approved a pilot programme that will see Accounting Officers deployed directly to key ministries, including Public Works, Creative Industries, and National Security. The move is designed to improve expenditure monitoring, enforce compliance with financial regulations, and strengthen internal accounting systems.

Public financial management reform has become a priority across the Caribbean, with governments seeking to improve budget discipline and reduce inefficiencies in public spending.

Under the new framework, Accounting Officers will oversee expenditure tracking, certify payments, and provide monthly financial reports, while advising ministries on compliance with the Financial Administration Act.

Officials say the initiative is expected to reduce payment backlogs, improve reporting accuracy, and modernize financial governance within the public sector.
