Plans are in an advanced stage to improve street and community lighting across the country following a presentation by the Manager of Electricity of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).

The APUA official was invited to Cabinet to address ongoing concerns related to street and community lighting throughout Antigua and Barbuda. During the engagement, Cabinet undertook a detailed review of lighting conditions in a number of communities and identified several areas requiring urgent intervention. Particular attention was paid to residential districts, roadways, public spaces, and other strategic locations where improved lighting is critical to enhancing visibility, safety, and overall community well-being.

APUA provided Cabinet with assurances that the issues identified would be addressed and committed to carrying out the necessary upgrades and repairs. The Authority further indicated that it has the technical capacity, equipment, and resources required to complete the works in a timely and efficient manner.

Cabinet welcomed the assurances and formally approved the advancement of a national lighting improvement programme, noting that adequate street and community lighting plays a vital role in public safety and crime prevention, road safety for motorists and pedestrians, community development, and the strengthening of national security efforts.

The Government reiterated that well-lit communities are a key component of its broader strategy to create safer neighbourhoods and a more secure national environment.

APUA is expected to begin targeted interventions in the identified areas, with priority given to communities where deficiencies are most severe. The programme will include the installation of new lights, repairs to non-functioning streetlights, replacement of damaged fixtures, and upgrades to existing infrastructure where necessary.
