The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has advanced plans for critical road rehabilitation works along Friars Hill Road and the Sir George Walter Highway, supported by additional financing from the Caribbean Development Bank. The programme targets long-standing drainage and flooding issues that have repeatedly affected traffic flow, public safety, and nearby businesses, particularly in the Woods Mall area and along sections of the Sir George Walter Highway.
The Antigua Road Rehabilitation Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Works through its Project Implementation Management Unit, with contracted consultants providing technical support in design, tendering, and construction supervision. The Ministry has now opened the tender process, inviting local contractors to submit bids for the next phase of works.
To ensure efficient execution, the project has been divided into several packages. Package One covers Friars Hill Road from the Cedar Grove Roundabout to the Link Road connecting to Marble Hill Road. Package Three focuses on the section from Summer Lane Junction to the YMCA roundabout, while Package Four targets the Sir George Walter Highway from Airport Junction to the Old Parham Road Junction. Across all packages, the scope of work includes drainage upgrades, the construction of retaining walls and sidewalks, improvements to bus shelters, and the reinstatement of road shoulders.
A key objective of the programme is to reduce persistent flooding and improve overall road resilience. Each construction package is scheduled for completion within eighteen weeks, reflecting an emphasis on timely delivery once contracts are awarded.
Bids must be submitted in hard copy to the Procurement Board at the Project Implementation Management Unit on Upper Corn Alley, St. John’s, or electronically to tenders.board@ab.gov.ag, no later than 2:00 p.m. on March 5, 2026. Late submissions will not be accepted. Requests for clarification and/or queries can be made on or before February 19, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Interested contractors can find more tender information at ab.gov.ag.
A pre-bid meeting and site visit are scheduled for January 29 at 10:00 a.m. at the PIMU Conference Room on Upper Corn Alley, providing prospective bidders with an opportunity to review project requirements and site conditions before submitting final proposals.
