The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has appointed Jamaican dancehall artiste Masicka along with renowned Warri players Trevor Simon and Terrence Kambuie Charles as Cultural Ambassadors, in a dual effort to strengthen the nation’s creative industries and preserve its cultural heritage.
The appointments form part of a broader national strategy aimed at expanding opportunities for youth engagement while safeguarding traditional practices that define the country’s identity.
Masicka, whose given name is Javaughn Nicholas Fearon, has been tasked with supporting youth talent development and fostering collaboration within the creative industries. His role will include mentorship programmes, artist exchange initiatives, and structured training opportunities designed to equip young Antiguans and Barbudans with the skills needed to compete in the global music industry. Officials say the initiative will also target at-risk youth, using music and creative expression as tools for intervention and empowerment.
Across the Caribbean, governments have increasingly turned to the creative economy as a driver of growth, recognizing the global reach of regional music and culture. Antigua and Barbuda’s latest move is expected to enhance its cultural exports while creating sustainable pathways for emerging artists.
At the same time, the Government has moved to reinforce cultural preservation efforts through the appointment of Simon and Charles, two of the country’s most accomplished Warri players. Warri, an ancient strategy game of African origin, has long been regarded as an important symbol of heritage in the Caribbean.
Cabinet officials praised the pair for their dedication to promoting the game locally, regionally, and internationally, noting their success in reintroducing Warri into schools and community programmes.
