The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is set to launch a transformative pilot project on the Burning Flames Highway, introducing two advanced road-construction technologies aimed at improving the durability and cost-efficiency of the nation’s road network.
During Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, the Ministry of Public Works presented findings from a technical mission to Pereira, Colombia, where a delegation assessed the performance of SILICONPOX soil stabilization technology and Natural Asphalt Cold Mix (Asfaltita) developed by Hermis Corporation.
Engineers reported that SILICONPOX—an environmentally friendly soil stabilizer—can strengthen the base layers of roadways, reduce permeability, and extend pavement lifespan by up to 50% or more in weak soil conditions. The Natural Asphalt Cold Mix, a cold-applied wearing surface, offers energy-efficient installation and improved durability.
Minister of Public Works, Hon. Maria Browne, said the pilot project “marks a major step toward revolutionizing road construction and reducing long-term maintenance costs.”
The results of the pilot will guide future national road rehabilitation and infrastructure programmes.
