The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has reaffirmed its commitment to national food security and agricultural expansion following the successful implementation of a policy decision to repossess unused and non-performing agricultural lands.

Speaking at the Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, Minister for Agriculture Anthony Smith reported that the Ministry of Agriculture has so far repossessed approximately 150 acres of farmland that were previously underutilized or not in active production. The move forms part of the Government’s wider strategy to boost domestic food production, reduce reliance on imports, and ensure that arable land is placed in the hands of committed and productive farmers.

During the meeting, the Minister presented recommendations for the immediate reallocation of a portion of the recovered lands. Cabinet subsequently agreed that 75 acres of the repossessed land will be specifically allocated to youth and women farmers under a targeted empowerment and agricultural development initiative.

The decision reflects the Government’s recognition of the vital role that young people and women play in modernizing and sustaining the agricultural sector. By improving access to land, Cabinet aims to encourage entrepreneurship, increase agricultural output, and stimulate economic activity in rural communities.

Under the approved framework, the Ministry of Agriculture will issue rental agreements to selected farmers to ensure structured and accountable use of the land. Performance assessments will be conducted, and once agreed production benchmarks are met, farmers will be eligible for longer-term lease arrangements. Cabinet noted that this system is intended to keep land distribution merit-based, productivity-driven, and aligned with national agricultural priorities.

Cabinet further emphasized that agricultural land is a strategic national asset that must be actively cultivated in the interest of food security, economic resilience, and sustainable national development.

The Government has reiterated its resolve to strengthen local food systems, support high-performing farmers who require additional acreage, and create clear pathways for the development of the next generation of agricultural leaders.
