Government has signaled plans to intervene in rising airfare costs between Antigua and Barbuda, acknowledging growing concerns over accessibility and economic impact.

The issue was brought to Cabinet by caretaker for Barbuda affairs, Kendra Beazer, who highlighted the financial strain on residents navigating the inter-island route. Limited transportation options and escalating fares have made routine travel increasingly difficult, particularly for Barbudans who depend on Antigua for essential services.

Regional travel challenges have been a recurring issue across small island states, where limited competition and operational costs often drive up ticket prices. In Antigua and Barbuda, the short but critical route plays a key role in healthcare access, commerce, and social connectivity.

Cabinet has committed to introducing a subsidy to ease airfare costs and improve mobility. Beazer has been tasked with submitting a detailed proposal outlining how the subsidy would be structured and implemented.

Officials say the measure is intended to ensure equitable access to transportation while supporting economic activity between the sister islands.
