In a major step forward for healthcare, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved the establishment of its first National Cardiology Center.

The facility, to be developed in partnership with China’s Hangzhou Normal University and based at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre, is expected to significantly expand access to specialized cardiac care.

Currently, many Caribbean patients must travel overseas for advanced heart procedures, often at significant personal cost. Cardiovascular diseases remain among the leading causes of death globally, including in small island developing states.

The new center will offer advanced diagnostic and interventional services, reducing the need for overseas treatment. It will be led by internationally recognized cardiologist Xingwei Zhang.

Officials say the facility could become operational by year’s end and position Antigua and Barbuda as a regional hub for cardiac care.
