Antigua and Barbuda’s national Under-20 men’s football team has been hailed for achieving one of the country’s most significant sporting milestones after securing qualification for the 2026 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, while plans have also been confirmed for the return of Premier League football to the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG).

The achievement was highlighted during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, where members received a joint presentation from the General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) and the President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association on the state of football development and the nation’s preparations for the regional tournament.

The championship, which will be staged in Mexico from July 24 to August 9, will feature the region’s top 12 youth teams and serves as a qualifying competition for both the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games. Antigua and Barbuda earned its place after emerging from the qualifying stage, joining only a handful of Caribbean nations in the competition.

Cabinet was advised that Antigua and Barbuda is the only member state of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to qualify for this year’s championship, a feat officials described as a landmark moment for the country’s football programme.

Twenty-one young Antiguan and Barbudan footballers will represent the twin-island nation at the tournament, providing an opportunity to showcase local talent on one of the region’s biggest youth football stages while inspiring the next generation of players.

Cabinet commended the players, coaching staff and administrators for what it described as an outstanding accomplishment, noting that the qualification reflects years of commitment and investment in youth football development.

Football Association officials also outlined a broader vision for expanding the sport, including strengthening domestic club competitions, improving sporting infrastructure and increasing opportunities for youth participation across Antigua and Barbuda.

The meeting also featured extensive discussions on the future use of the historic Antigua Recreation Ground, with Sports Minister Dwayne George leading deliberations on balancing the venue’s traditional role as the country’s premier cricket facility with growing demands from football.

Representatives of both the football and cricket associations agreed that careful scheduling, maintenance and coordinated management would allow both sports to coexist successfully at the venue without compromising playing conditions or the facility’s long-term viability.

Following what Cabinet described as extensive deliberations, it was agreed that Premier League football will return to the Antigua Recreation Ground for the September to December season under a new pilot operational framework designed to assess the arrangement’s effectiveness before any long-term decisions are made.

Cabinet also considered proposals for the establishment of a dedicated management structure for the ARG to oversee scheduling, maintenance and day-to-day operations, with the objective of maximizing the use of one of the country’s most historic sporting venues.

The Antigua Recreation Ground has long occupied a central place in the nation’s sporting heritage, hosting international cricket matches, regional competitions and major national events. Officials believe a structured management model could allow the facility to continue serving both football and cricket while preserving its status as a premier sporting venue.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to sport as an important tool for youth empowerment, national pride, social development and economic activity, while extending its best wishes to the national Under-20 team ahead of its campaign in Mexico.

The regional championship is expected to attract significant international attention, with the four semi-finalists earning qualification to the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, adding further significance to Antigua and Barbuda’s historic participation on the continental stage.
