Cabinet has approved a series of appointments to statutory and advisory boards responsible for overseeing key areas of healthcare, environmental management and public administration.

The appointments, endorsed during Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, form part of the administration’s ongoing programme to strengthen governance and improve service delivery following the April 30 General Elections.

Minister for Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs Michael Joseph presented recommendations for appointments to several bodies that play critical roles in regulating healthcare professions, managing public institutions and advancing environmental sustainability.

Among the appointments is a new Antigua and Barbuda Nursing Council, which will continue its responsibility for maintaining professional standards within the nursing profession and safeguarding the quality of patient care across the country.

Cabinet also approved a new Board for the National Solid Waste Management Authority, which will provide strategic oversight of the nation’s waste management systems and environmental initiatives at a time when sustainability and climate resilience remain national priorities.

The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre will receive a newly appointed Board chaired by Dr. Philmore Benjamin, with responsibility for guiding the strategic direction of the country’s principal referral hospital and supporting ongoing improvements in healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Cabinet also endorsed appointments to the Stem Cell Research and Therapy Board, reflecting Antigua and Barbuda’s continued efforts to develop a modern regulatory framework for emerging medical technologies while ensuring that research and innovation proceed within internationally accepted ethical standards.

Government officials said the appointments reflect a commitment to placing experienced and qualified individuals in positions where they can contribute to institutional effectiveness and national development.

Cabinet expressed confidence that the newly appointed board members possess the expertise and professionalism necessary to strengthen governance across their respective sectors while advancing the Government’s agenda of accountability, efficiency and improved public service delivery.

The administration said strengthening public institutions remains essential to improving the quality of life for citizens and ensuring that national development objectives are achieved through effective leadership and sound governance.
