The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of the Fort James Beach area, choosing to spearhead the project in partnership with local stakeholders rather than proceed with a long-standing proposal submitted by Royal Caribbean.

Cabinet approved a development strategy aimed at transforming Fort James into a premier heritage, recreational and tourism destination while preserving the site’s historical significance and expanding opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

The project envisions extensive shoreline protection works, including the installation of groynes and beach replenishment measures designed to stabilize and enhance the coastline.

Existing commercial activities will also be reorganized through the construction of designated facilities for vendors, artisans and small businesses, creating a more structured and attractive environment for visitors.

One of the centrepieces of the redevelopment will be the reclamation and development of approximately three acres of land to accommodate an expanded entertainment and recreational district. Plans include an amphitheatre capable of hosting cultural performances, festivals and community events, alongside landscaped green spaces for residents and tourists.

Cabinet also approved the continuation of restoration work at the historic Fort James fortress itself, with a second phase of preservation efforts intended to safeguard one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most significant heritage landmarks.

Government officials said residents, business operators, heritage advocates and other stakeholders will be actively engaged throughout the planning and implementation process to ensure the redevelopment reflects community aspirations.

The initiative is expected to boost visitor arrivals, stimulate economic activity and create new employment opportunities while showcasing the country’s rich history and cultural identity.

Cabinet expressed confidence that the project will establish Fort James as one of the Caribbean’s leading heritage tourism attractions, combining history, recreation and commerce in a way that benefits both visitors and local communities.
