A nationwide expansion of surveillance technology is now underway as Antigua and Barbuda intensifies efforts to strengthen public safety and modernize crime prevention systems.
The update was provided during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting by Minister responsible for Information Communication Technologies, the Hon. Melford Nicholas, who confirmed that the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has already commenced the installation of security cameras at strategic locations across the country.
According to Cabinet, the programme will continue over the coming months with more than 200 cameras expected to be deployed islandwide to maximize surveillance coverage and improve operational effectiveness.
Officials said the initiative forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to utilize modern technology and digital infrastructure to support law enforcement, improve emergency response coordination, and enhance community safety.
The expanded surveillance network is expected to assist police in monitoring criminal activity, strengthening investigative capabilities, supporting traffic management operations, and improving overall public security operations.
Cabinet expressed full support for the initiative and reaffirmed its commitment to equipping the Royal Police Force with the technological tools and resources necessary to effectively carry out its mandate of protecting lives and property.
Members further noted that the programme represents another important step in the modernization of national security systems and efforts to improve public confidence in community safety initiatives.
Cabinet also commended the Royal Police Force, the Ministry responsible for ICTs, and all stakeholders involved in the implementation of the project for their continued work in enhancing public safety across Antigua and Barbuda.
