Residents requiring advanced eye treatment may soon gain access to life-changing medical procedures locally as Antigua and Barbuda moves to expand specialized ophthalmological services through a new international partnership.
During Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, Health Minister the Hon. Michael Joseph updated members on ongoing efforts to modernize eye care services and improve treatment options for individuals suffering from serious vision conditions.
Cabinet was advised that the Ministry of Health is in the advanced stages of finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding with the World Eye Mission of the United States, which will facilitate the introduction of free corneal replacement surgeries in Antigua and Barbuda.
Under the initial phase of the programme, five corneal replacement surgeries are expected to be carried out locally, providing critical treatment to patients who otherwise may have been forced to seek costly medical care overseas.
The partnership is also expected to pave the way for additional complex eye procedures and specialized ophthalmological services aimed at improving access to modern, high-quality care across the country.
Minister Joseph described the initiative as part of the Government’s broader vision to modernize healthcare delivery and ensure that advanced medical services become increasingly available within Antigua and Barbuda.
Cabinet welcomed the initiative, describing it as a transformative step in strengthening the nation’s healthcare system. Members also noted that the programme is expected to reduce the financial burden on patients and families traditionally required to travel abroad for specialized eye treatment.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to investing in healthcare infrastructure, specialist services, and strategic international partnerships designed to improve the quality and accessibility of medical care nationwide.
