Families living with autism and other neurodivergent disorders in Antigua and Barbuda are expected to benefit from expanded support services following Cabinet’s approval of plans to establish a specialized Cognitive Behavioral Centre.

The initiative was presented during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting by Minister for Health, Wellness, the Environment and Public Service Affairs, the Hon. Michael Joseph, who outlined the growing demand for specialized developmental and therapeutic services across the country.

Minister Joseph noted that many parents and caregivers continue to face emotional, social, and financial challenges due to the limited availability of trained professionals and dedicated treatment facilities for persons living with autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.

In response, Cabinet approved the Ministry’s proposal to establish a centre dedicated to the early detection, assessment, and treatment of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Cabinet was informed that recruitment efforts are already underway to secure key professionals for the facility, including an occupational therapist, a speech pathologist, and a neurological psychologist.

The proposed centre will provide specialized interventions for children and adults while also offering counselling, educational guidance, and support services for parents and caregivers navigating the challenges associated with neurodivergent conditions.

Minister Joseph emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in improving developmental outcomes and enhancing quality of life. He added that the initiative forms part of the Government’s wider efforts to expand access to specialized healthcare services and strengthen support systems for vulnerable families.

Cabinet welcomed the project as a significant advancement in healthcare delivery and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to building a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare system capable of responding to the diverse needs of the population.
