Government says it is pressing ahead with an ambitious national infrastructure programme that includes major road rehabilitation works and continued housing expansion across the country.

During Tuesday’s Throne Speech, Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams pointed to significant upgrades already completed on several major roadways, including Sir George Walter Highway, Friars Hill Road, Sir Sidney Walling Highway, Valley Road and the Parham to Willikies route.

The All Saints Road project is also continuing as part of the wider national road improvement initiative.

The Government disclosed that a consortium of banks has agreed to provide financing of approximately EC$150 million to support the roadworks programme through a vehicle user-fee arrangement.

Public Works Minister Maria Browne was praised for overseeing the road rehabilitation programme, despite challenges linked to regional cement shortages.

Officials said dredging works at Crabbes are expected to improve access to cement supplies and ease shortages affecting ongoing construction projects.

The Throne Speech also highlighted the Government’s housing programme, noting that more than 2,000 homes have been constructed through the National Housing and Urban Development Company and the Central Housing and Planning Authority over the past 12 years.

The administration said demand for affordable housing continues to grow and pledged to further expand construction efforts in the coming months.
