Major transformation works are continuing at the future home of the Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies (ABCAS) School of Agriculture as the Government pushes ahead with plans to expand agricultural education and strengthen food security initiatives.

The presentation was delivered by the Head of ABCAS, who outlined significant refurbishment and restructuring works currently underway at the School of Agriculture ahead of the institution’s planned opening for the September 2026 academic year.

Cabinet was informed that the School of Agriculture has already begun offering short courses designed to provide participants with practical agricultural training and create new opportunities within the sector. Students participating in the programmes also showcased produce cultivated through the initiative, highlighting the institution’s growing capabilities and early successes.

Officials reported that extensive renovations are currently taking place across the campus, including the rehabilitation of classrooms, laboratories, administrative offices and agricultural support facilities. Among the works presently underway are the refurbishment of six classrooms and the auditorium, installation of security louvre windows, repairs to hurricane shutters, epoxy flooring and the outfitting of food laboratory and storage areas.

Cabinet also heard that the project includes major upgrades to scientific and technical infrastructure. These improvements include the refurbishment of a chemistry laboratory and the construction of a new biology laboratory equipped with upgraded water, gas and electrical systems.

Additional works include electrical upgrades, installation of energy-efficient lighting, improvements to roofing and drainage systems, painting works, expanded air-conditioning systems and new laboratory exhaust infrastructure.

Plans are also progressing for the construction of two poultry pens and the reconfiguration of several buildings to accommodate student services, conference facilities, cafeterias, storage areas and staff amenities.

Cabinet commended the leadership of ABCAS, faculty members, technical personnel and students for the progress made thus far and for their continued commitment to strengthening agricultural education and advancing food security in Antigua and Barbuda.

Members of Cabinet noted that the continued development of the School of Agriculture forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to expand technical and vocational education, encourage greater youth involvement in agriculture and improve national resilience through increased local food production.

Cabinet further expressed satisfaction with the pace of the refurbishment programme and reaffirmed its support for the completion of the project ahead of the upcoming school year.
