Government, last Wednesday, welcomed Professor Xingwei Zhang of Huanzhou University and Huanzhou Hospital for high-level discussions on deepening medical cooperation and advancing Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare capabilities. Professor Zhang presented a series of proposals aimed at strengthening clinical training, expanding specialist services, and integrating advanced medical technologies into the national health system.
During his presentation, Professor Zhang outlined opportunities for medical training exchanges, scholarship pathways, joint research, emergency-care development, and modernization of diagnostic services. He highlighted growing areas such as telemedicine, chronic disease management, and minimally invasive cardiac interventions, noting Huanzhou’s willingness to support skills transfer to local clinicians.
The Cabinet received a detailed briefing on cardiovascular disease trends across the Caribbean and discussed opportunities for early detection programmes, community-level education, and investments in modern cardiac care. With heart disease continuing to rise globally, Professor Zhang emphasized the importance of robust public health capabilities and specialist readiness. Cabinet Ministers welcomed the findings and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening health infrastructure and building a modern healthcare system capable of reducing reliance on overseas treatment.
