Citing rising geopolitical tensions in Caribbean waters involving Venezuela and the United States, the Cabinet has adopted major new measures to accelerate agricultural production and strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s food security.
Cabinet emphasized that the country must prepare for potential disruptions to regional supply chains. While acknowledging progress made over the past decade, the Government said current risks demand “a full shift into production mode.”
Lands to Be Reassigned If Not Cultivated
Farmers with leased agricultural land will now have 30 days to begin cultivation or face reassignment of their acreage to other farmers or cooperatives ready to produce.
Expanded State Support for Agriculture
Immediate actions include:
- Increased fencing to curb praedial larceny
- Expansion of nurseries and seedling distribution
- New wells, dams, and ponds
- Lighting for farm security
- Upgraded farm access roads
- Fuel subsidies for fishermen
Cabinet also approved two major new facilities:
- Agro-Industrial Park (Diamonds)
- Eco Park (Christian Valley)
Both sites will support agro-processing, feed production, small ruminant development, and value-chain enhancement.
Cabinet updated the national reforestation target from 1 million to 300,000 trees annually, citing operational practicality.
The Government reiterated that food security is equivalent to national security and vowed ongoing support to farmers, fishermen, cooperatives, and backyard growers.
